Sunday last
saw our Junior B team host St. Martins in the League Championship. The Bridge
were looking good and after just 5 minutes they led on a score line of 3-1. A
lot of this team have been getting plenty of playing time on the Intermediate
team in the recent O’Byrne Cup games but as this game progressed the hunger
which has been so good over the last 2 years in all grades was not visible.
Going in at half time we were down by 9-7 with 4 of their points coming from
frees. St Martins were quick out of the blocks again at the start of the 2nd
half and added 2 more points before the Bridge lads knew it. Things got worse
and the Saints pushed on and went 5 points up before the Bridge lost 2 of their
most influential players with hamstring injuries. Michael Power was behind
anything that happened in the Bridge attack. Shane Nolan kept the Martins full
forward line at bay. Things got worse and with just 3 minutes left they got in
for a goal which was a sloppy affair. The young sub Ronan O’Connor got a ball
on the 45 and after making some headway let fly and stuck the ball in the
corner of the net. A minute later a free won out near the sideline and the
resulting strike from Kevin Brennan somehow found its way to the net. Alas it
was too little too late and they eventually went down by 2 points. |
