Bennettsbridge U14 – Roinn B County Champions

posted Oct 21, 2014, 3:39 AM by Alan Flynn

The U14 hurlers crowned a magnificent year when the captured the Roinn B Championship with a great win over GraigueBallycallan in John Lockes Park on Saturday on a scoreline of BB 3-7 to GB 0-8 and completed a clean sweep of titles for 2014. Played in blustery conditions which made scoring difficult , the Bridge started brightly and opened the scoring with a well taken point. Then following some excellent interlink play between defence and attack , they found the net with a well taken goal. They kept the pressure up and in response to pointed frees from their opponents added further points to leave the score BB 1-5 GB 0-5 at half time. In the second half the Bridge got off to a great start when a shot from distance was well contested by the onrushing forwards and ended up in the Graigueballycallan net. Griagueballycallan  fought back hard adding points but , as in the first half, the Bridge defence was magnificent again during the second half and defended the goal with all their might and kept the scores to a minimum. The game was made safe ten minutes from time when the Bridge won a puck out and following some fine passing movements finished to the net. The Bridge added two further points to take the title.  This was an excellent team performance by Bennettsbridge played in difficult conditions with

the defence playing heroically which provided a steady supply of quality ball to the midfield and forwards who combined well to take their scores. A notable characteristic of this team,  in addition to their skill levels , is their teamplay and  unselfish use of the ball , always looking to find a better placed colleague  . They also showed great determination and character when under pressure during the game but held out for a great win.  The Cup was presented to captain Conor Murphy to scenes of great joy.   The winning panel was Harry Murphy, Tom O’Donnell, Danny Coyne, Laurence Mahon , Jamie Harkin, Conor Murphy , Daniel Murphy , Tom Bolger, David Blanchfield (0-1) , Barry Lennon ,Ciarán Brennan (3-3), Sean O’Connell , Gary Anderson, Tim Corkery (0-3) , Mikey Lewis . Subs – Matthew Treacy for Gary Anderson , Michael Molloy , Conor Nolan for Mikey Lewis , John Doyle and Ben King .
