Bennettsbridge Senior team lose Rd 2 of league to St Martins

They say all good things come to an end and so it was in St. John’s Park on Sunday last when our senior team lost their unbeaten run after 2 and half years. Traditionally slow to start on this occasion we were level after 10 minutes. Then St Martins took hold and over the next 6 minutes they put daylight between the sides and were winning all lines on the field. Over the final 5 minutes of the half our boys staged a comeback with 4 unanswered points. This left the half time score at 1-9 to 0-9 in favour of the saints. The second half started well for the Bridge with 2 more unanswered points reducing the deficit to a single point. However this was as good as it got and 2 quick goals from St. Martins put them in control and gave them a lead they would not relinquish. Brian Lannon who was deputising for the injured Nicky Cleere slotted over points from frees but at this stage it was goals we needed and St. Martins were not letting our forwards away with the ball to cause concern. Liam Blanchfield finally struck the net but only after the second attempt after the first was somehow stopped by an injured Martins goalie. Enda Cleere made a wonderful save near the end to deny St. Martins another goal when he was faced one on one by the Martins full forward but Enda kept his cool and smothered the ball and cleared his line. Losing Jason Cleere and without the services of Nicky Cleere did not help but in fairness this was not to be our day. Sometimes you can learn more from a defeat than a win but in this case the learning will have to be quick as we face The Rower Inistioge on Friday night in Thomastown at 7.30pm. The Team was E Cleere, J Moran, R Lennon, C Wafer, E Morrissey, J Cleere, A Cleere(0-1), D Wafer, K Blanchfield, H O’Neill, B Lannon(0-13), P O’Neill, M Shiel, L Blanchfield(1-1), S Morrissey(0-4). Subs used. E Fitzgerald, D Walsh, K Brennan.
