On Sunday our Junior B team lined out in the League Final against Carrigeen in Mullinavat. Having played them in Carrigeen just a few weeks ago we came out with a heavy defeat. On this occasion we were missing a large number of players due to injury and exams it was a case of calling on some old hands to make up the numbers. Going in at half time 5 points down things did not look good and when the deficit was stretched to 7 after 7 minutes of the second half things looked bad. But then our stalwarts dug deep and gradually they clawed their way back into the game and by full time the sides were level thanks to 2 wonderful strikes from Kevin Brennan. A wonderful strike from Shane Brennan who buried a pass from Gary Hayes set the comeback in motion and given Shane has not played for a number of years he caused trouble for the Carrigeen defence every time he got on the ball. Another comeback kid Seamus Moran used all his experience to clear a number of balls when they were on the attack. In extra time we were the stronger with our legs holding out better and at half time we had a lead of 2 points. Back came Carrigeen and they got 3 points to 1 after 5 minutes but then a Ben Tynan goal turned the game in our favour and with time up we were in front by 4 points. Somehow the referee saw fit to add on 3 minutes with no stoppages during play and a goal and a point from the opposition and so a replay is required. Missing so many players and asking blokes to put on the jersey in very hot conditions our players showed great energy. Final score was Bennettsbridge 3-19 Carrigeen 3-19. Our Team was B Tynan(1-1)(Ben moved to half forward for the second half of the match swapping with W Murphy), L Mc Carthy, P O’Neill, J Hayes, L Dowling, Pat O’Neill, S Byrne, D Walsh(0-4),K Brennan(0-11),S Moran, S Brennan(1-1), G Hayes(0-1), J Murphy, W Murphy(0-1), T Kiely(1-0). |
