Bennettsbridge played hosts to Dicksboro in this round 5 game of the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Junior B hurling league on a wet and cold evening fixture on Saturday evening last. Bennettsbridge were without a few regulars so this was going to be a test of their panel. However they were first off the mark with a Willie Murphy point inside the first minute. Dicksboro responded but 2 efforts within a minute went wide of the mark and The Bridge responded with a second point from Murphy. A further wide from the Boro men was compounded with a fine strike from Kevin Brennan from a 65. Dicksboro finally got off the mark with a well taken score from Peter Fitzpatrick after 7 minutes. Another wide from The Boro corner forward was followed up by a well taken individual point from Shane Byrne coming out of defence to slot over on the run from the 45m mark. Another point from K Brennan saw The Bridge men edge to a 5-1 lead and things were looking good especially as they were playing into the wind. The Boro men struck 2 unanswered points and were getting a hold especially in their half back line. This was short lived however when Brennan and Murphy slotted over points from play that brought the game to the 23rd minute. From here to half time the Boro won 3-1 with 2 lovely points from Adrian Stapleton ( one from a side line ball was the score of the game). At half time the teams went in on a score of BB 0-8 Dicksboro 0-5. Stapleton was first off the mark in the second half and he was now causing most problems for the home defence. Bennettsbridge also hit a number of wide’s during the early exchanges of the half and on the 15min mark were just 2 points down. The turning point of the game came next when the Boro men were bearing down on goal only for Patrick O’Neill making a great block to prevent a certain goal. This sparked life back into the home side and a very good point from Murphy set the scene for the remainder of the game. A point from Micheal Shiel who was now taking control of the middle of the field was followed up by 2 more from Stapleton. However a run of 5 unanswered points for the home side settled matters . The Boro men had the final say with a point from Fitzpatrick on 34 minutes the final score of the game.
