Bennettsbridge 0-11   Lisdowney 1-8

Old rivalries resumed in Muckalee last Saturday evening when Bennettsbridge faced up to Lisdowney in the IHL round 4. Having played each other in some very tight games at Junior level this was their first encounter at the higher grade and things just haven’t changed. The weather changed for the worse before throw in with a heavy drizzle falling which never helps the standard of the game. The game started at a fierce pace and on 2 minutes Sean Morrissey had the Bridge in front and this was quickly added to by Willie Murphy. Things were looking good for the Bridge only to concede the only goal of the night after just 4 minutes. Lisdowney made it double scores after 8 minutes with a pointed free. Back came the Bridge with points from Liam Blanchfield and a pointed free from Nicky Cleere. It was nip and tuck all the way to half time and only for some wide shooting we could have gone in at half time with a comfortable lead. The Bridge lads were winning a lot of ball from the opposition puck outs but were not completing the final pass and as a result Lisdowney were able to clear their lines with ease. The second half started in the same vein with our lads hitting the wides and Lisdowney taking the bulk of their chances. Half way through the 2nd half it was 1-6 to 0-7 and there was no sign of that free flowing style we have got used to from our lads. For the last quarter however Lisdowney only managed 2 pointed dead balls while the Bridge 4 points 3 frees for Willie Murphy and a well taken score from Kevin Blanchfield who after suffering a heavy knock at the initial throw in (from one of his team mates) battled hard and made some telling runs which won us a free or two. When the final whistle blew we were putting all the pressure on but the management were happy with the result which keeps us on top of the table with one game left against St Lactains in 5 weeks time. Our team lined out. E Cleere, E Murphy, J Moran, P O’Neill, J Cleere, R Lennon, A Cleere, E Morrissey(0-2), K Blanchfield(0-1), M Shiel, S Morrissey(0-2), N Cleere(0-1), L Blanchfield(0-1), B Lannon, W Murphy(0-4), Sub used E Fitzgerald.
