The sign of a really good team is how they respond to a defeat and on Friday evening last our senior team responded in an emphatic way. Playing against a very strong and well balanced team from The Rower Inistioge our boys played with great speed and direction in a windswept Thomastown. The management were forced into making a few changes with Eddie Murphy coming in at corner back and Jason Cleere after suffering a hip injury just 5 days earlier but keen to play started at corner forward instead of his normal half back line. But the real good players can adjust to any position and Jason did just that winning a lot of ball especially in the 1st. half when Enda Cleeres puck outs were dropping into his zone. Nicky Cleere was also back after missing the game against St. Martins and once again he chipped in with his usual tally of scores. For the management it was the intensity of our play and the hunger of every player to fight for every ball that would be most pleasing. Going in at half time 7 points to 5 in front with a strong wind in our backs it might have been felt we needed a bit more of a cushion but we also know that we have played our best hurling in the second half over the last few years. Liam Blanchfield scored the all important goal and he took it so well. Fed the ball by Sean Morrissey Liam took on the defence and with speed to burn he got free and made no mistake from a tight angle. The other factor the management would have been pleased with was how we defended when the pressure was applied near the end and everyone was prepared to put the body in the way and make sure we went into the break with 3 points from 3 games. Enda Cleere once again was wonderful on the goal stopping a penalty 20 minutes into the 2nd half and making a great save with just a couple of minutes to go making sure there was a blank on the scoreboard in the goal slot and resulting in a clear 7 point victory. The team lined out: E Cleere, E Murphy, J Moran, C Wafer, E Morrissey, R Lennon, A Cleere, D Wafer, H O’Neill (0-1), L Blanchfield (1-0), K Blanchfield, N Cleere(0-11), J Cleere, B Lannon, S Morrissey.
